In Greek mythology the Titans, also known as the elder gods, ruled the earth before being overthrown by the Olympians.
Titans were the children of Uranus (Heaven) and Gaia (Earth) and were of gigantic size. Led by Cronus, the Titans overthrew Uranus, who until then was ruler of the world.
Zeus, son of Cronus and Rhea, eventually rebelled and overthrew the Titans, setting himself up as the supreme god. He controlled the rain and thunder, dispensed good and evil and was the protector and ruler of humankind.
Titan has come to mean any person or thing of enormous size including the largest of Saturn’s satellites. This Titan is larger in diameter than the planet Mercury and more massive than Pluto.
Perhaps the most famous Titan of the modern era was Titanic, which like the original Greek giants proved not to be indestructible.
