Sitting Bull

Sitting Bull was chief of the Sioux during the torrid period of American History following the American Civil War.

There were constant skirmishes and battles over land rights as white settlers moved onto land owned by Native Americans.

Chief Sitting Bull led his people in a campaign of resistance against the push to have them live on reservations.

Following the Battle of Little Bighorn, also known as Custer’s Last Stand, Sitting Bull fled into Canada. In 1881 he returned to the United States and settled on a reservation.

He toured extensively with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show before returning to the reservation in 1889.

Seen as a trouble maker, it was thought that Sitting Bull was again trying to stir his tribe into action. He was arrested in 1890 and shot dead during a rescue attempt.
